Bridging the Gap Between Sports Science and Elite Practice.
Welcome to the Sports Analysis Innovation Laboratory (SAILza).
Who We Are
At SAIL, our mission is to empower sports coaches, professional analysts, and elite sports organizations to master performance analysis. We deliver innovative education architectures and robust, data-driven environments designed to optimize athlete preparation and drive competitive results on the world stage.
What sets SAILza apart is our dual foundation: blending world-class academic rigor with nearly three decades of hands-on applied practitioner experience. We ground technical workflows in the "Why"—the true underlying purpose of tactical and performance interventions—to build sustainable analysis ecosystems that thrive even within resource-constrained environments.
Meet the Owner
Dr. Michele van Rooyen is a premier Applied Performance Analysis practitioner, senior mentor, and academic with more than 25 years of specialized experience across elite international sporting disciplines. Her distinguished career centers on closing the "implementation gap" by turning highly complex data matrices into actionable, competitive advantages for teams, coaches, and individual athletes.
A Legacy of Global & National Impact
Michele’s innovative methodologies have profoundly shaped international sport infrastructure. Notably, during her tenure working with the Springbok Sevens, she pioneered live video coding and immediate post-match feedback loops. This methodology yielded such a distinct competitive edge that it ultimately convinced World Rugby to introduce centralized analysis facilities for all international squads in 2007.
Beyond international rugby, Michele has driven analytical strategies and performance profiling at the national and club level across Netball (consulting for Netball South Africa's Proteas), Field Hockey, Cricket, and Football. Her structural interventions have directly up-skilled dozens of elite coaches and paved professional career trajectories for numerous former students into national team analyst positions.
Academic & Professional Authority
Michele holds a PhD from the University of Cape Town focused on the efficacy of visual feedback in elite sport and is currently completing a Doctor of Professional Practice in Sport at Leeds Beckett University. Her ongoing doctoral research directly fuels SAIL’s mission: analyzing the distinct structural demands of the modern sports landscape to create culturally appropriate, inclusive, and highly advanced digital learning spaces.
Recognized globally for her contributions to sports science, her credentials include:
